excellent with minor technical annoyances

This review is to provide a few of answers I initially had about the Mac downloadable version of Rosetta Stone - Spanish (Latin America) L1 - L5 and provide a couple of notes about the the technical aspect of my experience with it. If you are looking for for a review on the benefits of Rosetta Stone, others have written about them extensively

1. It is the same version as the boxed set. I ended up with version v4 TOTALe (downloaded Jan/12) including the limited-time free online features
2. Yes, It allowed me to install it on two Mac machines
3. You are provided one activation code that unlocks all 5 levels on both machines

The download and installation was as easy as any other program. Make sure you have broadband internet and a decently configured computer as the graphics, animation and progress sync may slow down your computer if you have an older configuration.

Every time I turn on the application, it goes through the audio set up. In my hands, the microphone set up always fails the first time (buttons to retry audio set up also become unclickable) and the activity slides do no appear as well. These 2 issues always resolve after I quit the application and restart it. It is a minor annoyance but it only takes me an extra minute to start the activities. Again, this might just be the computer I work on.

Good product with some bugs, really poor support

The idea of learning the language through immersion is great. The implementation is mostly decent, too - on the side of creative content and multimedia use. What takes a star out are bugs in the program that make the learning experience much more tedious than it could be. For example, the last version takes 20-30 seconds of 'synchronization' every time I go to the program's home screen. And it needs to go there often because after every 2-3 exercises the program fails to automatically advance to the next exercise, and I have to go back to the home screen. Now, if it takes over 20 seconds on my top-notch iMac with 15Mbps optical connection to Internet, I wonder how much time it takes on more mainstream computers. Oh, and another star goes out for the poorest tech support I've ever encountered so far. Multiple emails, 5-6 dropped and re-opened cases with all different folks on Rosetta side, and finally a 45-minute conversation ending with a promise to return a call that didn't materialize yet. So, if you are good with computers and aren't afraid of minor bugs - go ahead, buy it and you'll find it really valuable. Otherwise, look around for a more mature product.

HORRIBLE customer service

To say that Rosetta Stone customer service was inadequate would be an understatement. They are absolutely horrid. I'm not exaggerating. I spent two and a half hours on customer service line with Rosetta only to find out the download code did not work...and they could do nothing about it. I can't tell you how much the telephone jingle I was forced to listen to while on hold haunted me in my dreams last night. And the language barrier with the people in India...horrendous. It's like talking to a four year old.

I am still waiting on Amazon to resolve this issue while I'm out three hundred dollars.

I can't believe that Rosetta Stone has the reputation they do. I will absolutely never purchase a product from them again.
